Jæja, þá er ég mætt til Brisbane eftir ansi langt ferðalag og búin að hafa nokkuð nóg að gera og gaman frá því ég kom hingað

Well, I have arrived safe and well in Brisbane after quite a jorney and I have had plenty of action and fun since I came here.

Ég var komin hingað eldsnemma á fimmtudagsmorgunninn (22.júlí) eftir 10 tíma flug frá Frankfurt, 7tíma stopp í Seoul og aftur 10 tíma flug hingað. Ég flaug með Korean Air, sem ég mæli pottþétt með. Fyrra flugið var með skjá í sætisbakinu svo ég horfði á bíómyndir, telfdi smá og reyndi svo að sofa sem mest.

I arrived bright and early Thursday morning (22.July) eftir 10 hrs flight from Frankfurt, 7hr stop in Seoul and then again a 10 hr flight to here. I flew with Korean Air, highly recommended. The first flight had these screens in the seatback and personal systems, so I watched some movies, played chess a bit and also tried to sleep as much as I could.

Lenti svo í Seoul um kl.13 á miðvikudeginum og þar sem ég hafði ágætistíma gat ég farið af vellinum. Þeir bjóða upp á allskonar ferðir fyrir farþega sem stoppa í einhvern tíma. Því miður gat ég ekki farið í borgarferð þar sem þær fara allar um hádegið en fór í um klukkutímaferð og skoðaði hof sem er stutt frá flugvellinum. Þar var td. 1300 gamalt tré sem var búið að styrkja með steypu, frekar skrítið en soldið töff.

I then landed in Seoul around 13.00 on Wednesday and since I had quite some time I could leave the airport. They offer some good transit-trips, but unfortunately all the city trips had already departed so I just took a one hour temple trip, which was quite nice. There was e.g. a 1300 years old tree supported with concrete. Vorum bara tvö í þessari ferð með ‘fararstjóranum’, ég og maður frá Víetnam og svo hittum við líka á nokkra hermenn sem voru við æfingar í nágrenninu

We were only two in this trip with our guide, me and a Vietnamese guy, but we also met some Korean soldiers there which was cool.

Flugvöllurinn sjálfur er líka mjög skemmtilegur, á endanum gerði ég ekki einu sinni allt sem ég hafði skoðað að hægt væri að gera þar sem tíminn leið mjög hratt. En ég fór þó í svokallað menningarhorn þar sem maður getur málað svona fallegan blævæng með hefðbundnu kóresku blómamynstri og fékk svo eina til að skrifa nafnið mitt á Kóresku aftan á, afar góður minjagripur

The airport itself is also very good and has a lot of entertainment. In the end I didn’t even do all the things that I had seen online that they had, since the time went by very fast. But I did though go to this kind of cultural center where I painted a ‘fan’ with a typical Korean flower an also I got a girl there to write my name in Korean on the back, a very good souvenir.

Seinni vélin var aðeins minni og bara með stóra skjái fyrir alla, en það var ágætt, ég fékk inniskó og svona dót fyrir augun svo ég svaf mest alla leiðina.

The second aircraft was a little bit smaller and just had these big central screens, but that was good, I got slippers and blinds for the eyes so I slept almost the whole way.

Var svo sótt á flugvöllinn af skólanum, þeir bjóða upp svoleiðis, algjör snilld. Var keyrð hingað til sófa-fólksins míns, en já, ég s.s. ákvað að prufa Couch-surfing í fyrsta skipti, sem þýðir það að fólk býður sófann sinn til ferðalanga. Ég var ekkert smá heppinn með ‘sófa’, en sófinn minn er afar fínt rúm í sér herbergi og fólkið sem býr hérna er frábært. Hér býr eitt par (Tom&Ellen) og tveir aðrir strákar (Graham&Neran) og já, ein Mörtu-kisa (G-Unit) og tvær hænur :) - já sumar göturnar hérna eru líka fáránlega brattar, eins gott að það frystir ekki ;)

I got picked up by my university to the airport, they offer these services which is very good and I was driven to my couch-surfing people, ja, I decided to try Couch-surfing for the first time, but Couch-surfing is an online community where you can find a couch online for travelers. I was very lucky with my ‘couch’, since it is actually not a couch but a nice bed in a seperate room and the people that live here are brilliant. There is a couple here (Tom&Ellen), two other guys (Graham&Neran), one awesome cat and two chickens.

Þau tóku vel á móti mér og hafa gert fyrstu daga mína í Brisbane alveg frábæra. Á fimmtudagskvöldið fóru Tom og Neran með mig á frábæran útsýnisstað akkurat þegar sólin var að setjast og um nóttina passaði kisan að ég yrði nú ekki einmana ;)

The welcomed me very well and have made me first days in Brisbane great. Thursday night, Tom&Neran took me to this great lookout, where you can see over Brisbane, we went when the sun was setting and the first night their great cat saw to it that I wouldn’t be lonely, she reminds me so of my wonderful cat at home in Iceland.

Á föstudaginn fór ég svo í fyrsta tímann minn, smá munur frá tímunum í Frankfurt, en í þessum fyrirlestri voru um 150 manns (erum 12 í bekknum í Frankfurt), en þessi tími er sameiginlegur milli margra deilda, fagið heitir “Sustainable Practice in Built environment and Engineering” eða “Sjálfbær framkvæmt í byggðu umhverfi”. Eftir fyrirlesturinn var síðan skipt upp í minni hópa og rætt lauslega um málefni. Skólinn lítur vel út, hann er milli aðal miðbæjar - viðskipta hverfisins og grasagarðsins í Brisbane

On Friday I went to my first class. A big difference between Frankfurt and here since in this lecture there were aroun 150 people (we are 12 in my Frankfurt class), but this class is thought for many faculties together and is called “Sustainable Practice in Built environment and Engineering”. After the lecture we were then splitted up in smaller groups and discussed the matters from the lecture. The school looks really good, it is between the main central business district and the botanical gardens of Brisbane.

Á laugardaginn fór ég með Tom&Ellen í nokkrar antík búðir hérna í hverfinu, en hverfið sem ég er í heitir Paddington og er ca. 3 strætóstopp frá miðbænum, mjög kósý hverfi. Ég eldaði síðan fyrir fólkið afar góða grænmetissúpu og fylltar kjúklingabringur.

On Saturday Tom&Ellen then took me to some antique shops in the neighbourhood, but they live in Paddington, a very cosy district and like 3 busstops from the center. I then cooked for the guys a very yummy vegetable soup and chicken breasts filled with parmesan and homemade pesto.

Tom&Ellen buðu mér svo með í fyrsta ástralska partýið mitt, þar sem álpappír var þemað :)

Tom&Ellen were then so nice to invite me with them to my first Australian party, it even had a foil theme :)

Á sunnudaginn fóru svo Neran og Tabs, vinkona hans með mig í West End sem er talið frekar hipp og kúl hverfi hérna. Borðuðum Indverskan mat, röltum um hverfið og fengum okkur kaffi. Enduðum svo á að fara í bíó á Inception, nýju DiCaprio myndina. Mæli endilega með að sjá hana, sérstaklega áður en allir fara að tala um hana, en ég hafði ekki einu sinni hugmynd um hvað hún var áður en ég fór á hana. Ekki skemmir að það er frekar ódýrt að fara í bíó hérna í ákveðnum bíóhúsum.

On Sunday Neran&Tabs, his friend then took me to West End, a hip and cool neighbourhood. We had some good indian food, walked around the neighbourhood and got coffee. Then we ended up going to the movies and we saw the new DiCaprio movie, Inception. Highly recommend seeing it, especially before everybody starts talking about it, I had no idea what is was about before I saw it.Even better it is not so expensive to go to the cinema here, in some certain movie theaters.

Í gær (mánudagur) fór ég svo í annan tíma, þetta fag heitir “Integrated project” eða Einstaklings verkefni. Ég er ekki búin að velja mér verkefni ennþá þar sem ég missti af næstum allri fyrstu vikunni og er enn svona að koma mér fyrir. Þessi tími var nú ekki eiginlegur tími þar sem það var aðallega verið að kenna okkur á bókasafnskerfið á netinu í skólanum. Þeir virðast vera mjög duglegir í að setja bækur og greinar á netið og þó maður sé ekki í skólanum getur maður komist inn á gögnin ef maður fer gegnum bókasafnsheimasíðuna, mjög hentugt.

Í dag fór ég svo í fyrsta tímann sem er bara minn master, voru um 20manns og tíminn heitir “Urban Design and Theory Studio” eða Borgarhönnun og fræði - stúdíó, fyrst góður fyrirlestur og síðan svokallað stúdíó þar sem skipt er í minni hópa, ég mun vinna með stað hérna í Brisbane, sem var EXPO staðsetningin, þarf að velja mér aðal áherslu og koma með hugmyndir. Já skólinn byrjar nokkuð snarpt, en það sem er rosa gott hér er að það er ekki eitt stórt verkefni/próf í lok annarinnar, heldur miklu meira dreift yfir önnina. Þetta virðist vera frekar mikið en ég held þegar ég verð búin að koma mér fyrir og aðeins búin að kynnast hvernig skólinn virkar þá muni þetta ganga glimrandi vel.

Já, gleði gleði, fór svo í kvöld og skoðaði íbúð þar sem bróðir Ellen (sem býr hér) og vinur hans búa, en þeir voru akkurat að missa einn húsfélaga svo þeir eru með laust herbergi. Húsið er í hverfi sem heitir Toowong, ekkert rosalega langt frá miðbænum/skólanum, en það er bæði strætóstopp fyrir utan, lest nokkur skref frá og bátastopp og ekki nema þrjú bátastopp í skólann ;) já húsið er við ána, á svölunum er kósý sófi, útsýni yfir ána og miðbæinn (háhýsin), frekar kúl og ekkert of dýrt, svo ég get flutt inn í vikunni.

Jæja, best að skella sér í háttinn… Verð að játa að ég sakna Loga síns frekar mikið mikið, en sem betur fer er nóg að gera. Það skrítnasta við að vera hérna er hvað tímamunurinn er mikill, því ég er 10 tímum á undan Íslandi, svo þegar ég er að fara á fætur er fólk að fara að sofa heima. Líka skrítið að það er allt öfugt, keyra allir vinsta megin og allt það og hvað það dimmir mjög snemma. Núna er líka há’vetur’, svo það er svona um 20°c á daginn, fer niður fyrir 10°c á nóttinni, ég myndi nú kalla þetta íslenskt sumarveður en stærsti munurinn er sá að húsin hér eru ekki svona vel einangruð eins og heima og engir ofnar, svo það getur orðið frekar kalt inni á kvöldin, en það hlýnar nú bara úr þessu :)

Yesterday I then went to another class, in a subject called “Integrated Project”. I haven’t picked an assignment yet since I missed the first week here and am still settling in. This class was not kind of an actual class, more a tutorial for the online library, a good thing they seem to put a lot of books and literature online which I can access even if I am not at the university.

Today I then had the first class with only just the people taking the same master as I am. We were around 20 persons and the class is “Urban Design and Theory Studio”. First there was a very good lectuere and then a so called studio where we were divided in smaller groups. I will do a analysis and some solutions for a post expo site here in Brisbane, I haven’t picked my emphasis yet but probably I will focus somewhat on transport and open space. Yes, the school starts pretty quickly but what is really good here is that they don’t have just a 100% assignment/exam in the end of the semester, instead it is more divided throughout the semester. At first this seems to be a lot of study, but I am quite sure as soon as settle in and get the feeling for the studying here I will do good.

And yes, happy happy, I went tonight to look at a room in an apartment the Ellen’s brother and his friend live in. They just lost their roommate and have a free room. The house is in a neighbourhood called Toowong, not so far from the center/school, but it has a busstation in front, a trainstation a few steps a way and also a boat-station with around 3 stops to school :) Yah, so the house is by the river, it has a balcony with a cosy sofa and a view over the river and the center, rather nice and not too expensice, so I will be able to move in sometime in the week.

Well, better head of to bed…. I have to admit that I miss Logi very very much, but fortunately there are not many dull moments here so far. The strangest thing about being here is the extreme time difference, since I am 10 hrs ahead of Iceland, most of the people back home are going to sleep when I wake up. Well then everything is ofcourse up-side down, like they drive on the left side. It also gets dark really early, just after 17.00. It is also the middle of the ‘winter’ here, so it is around 20°c in the day, goes a little below 10°c in the night. I would call it Icelandic summer weather but the biggest difference it that they don’t have well insulated houses or ovens everywhere like back home, so it can get pretty cold inside during the night, but it will only get warmer :)
